World University Service of Canada

A Canadian global development organisation founded in 1920, providing education, economic opportunities and displacement response for youth, women and refugees in more than 30 countries.

World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is a Canadian global development organisation founded in 1920 by a group of students, originally to support displaced students in post-war Europe. It now operates in more than 30 countries and is one of Canada's longest-running international development institutions, with nearly a century of continuous work behind it.

The organisation's programmes fall into three main areas: education programming, which provides learning opportunities to people affected by conflict and displacement; economic opportunities programming, which seeks to create livelihoods for young people, particularly women and refugees; and forced displacement response, a field in which WUSC has developed deep expertise. Its stated aim across these areas is systemic change for youth affected by conflict and displacement, with an emphasis on enabling refugees and displaced young people to thrive and belong.

WUSC works through a network linking Canadian institutions, volunteers and international partners, and is part of a broader global network. The organisation describes itself as mission-driven, with a long-standing continuity of purpose alongside a culture of innovation and adaptation to changing needs. It is headquartered in Canada, where it remains based, and traces its origins to student-led voluntary action.
